From the Studio to the Stage: EMHS Recording Arts Live at Vista Grande

At East Mountain High School, the Record Arts program isn’t just a class; it’s a professional incubator masquerading as an elective. While most high schoolers are dissecting frogs or memorizing dates, these students are busy dissecting song structures and mastering the subtle physics of sound waves.
The Spark of Creation
The program was founded on a simple, radical premise: If you have a voice, you should own the means of production. Walk down the hall during a recording session, and you’ll find a student-led ecosystem in full swing. One room might hold a jazz trio perfecting a syncopated rhythm, while in the next, a lone songwriter pours their heart into a condenser mic, lit only by the blue glow of a digital audio workstation.
From Script to Stream
What sets EMHS Record Arts apart is the accountability of the “Finished Product.” The students don’t just play for a grade; they play for the world. Every year, the program facilitates the creation of original albums that are:
- Self-Written: No covers here. Students write the lyrics, the melodies, and the arrangements.
- Self-Performed: Every drum hit, bass line, and vocal harmony is executed by the students.
- Professional Release: The music is mixed, mastered, and distributed to major global platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music.
Live from the East Mountains
While their digital footprint reaches across the globe, the heart of the program remains rooted in the local community. The culmination of all those hours in the studio is finally moving from the headphones to the stage.
You can catch the next wave of talent live at their upcoming showcase:
- When: Wednesday, February 25
- Time: 6:00 PM
- Where: Vista Grande Community Center
- Cost: Free
The “Timberwolf” Sound
There is a specific grit to the music coming out of the East Mountains. It’s the sound of young artists who are given the keys to the studio and told to explore. Whether it’s indie folk that mirrors the quiet of the Sandia mountains or high-energy rock that echoes the vastness of the plains, the program provides a professional launchpad for the next generation of New Mexico’s creative class.
