Edgewood Mayor Announces His Retirement

EDGEWOOD, N.M. — Edgewood Mayor Mike Rariden announced his retirement from public office Wednesday, citing personal health concerns and family obligations.

Rariden, who also serves as the Town Commissioner for District 5, will formally step down during the week of May 4, 2026. The announcement follows the final implementation of a key Fire/EMS Joint Powers Agreement with Santa Fe County, a milestone the mayor identified as a prerequisite for his departure.

In a statement released by the town, Rariden noted that while the decision was difficult, the timing was intentional to ensure local emergency services were stabilized before his exit.

“This decision was not made lightly,” Rariden said. “It was intentionally delayed until a support agreement with Santa Fe County Fire/EMS could be reached and as many critical operational responsibilities as possible could be completed.”

A Lifetime of Service

The retirement marks the conclusion of a public service career spanning more than 48 years in various government roles. Rariden’s most recent tenure in Edgewood was defined by efforts to streamline town operations and strengthen inter-agency cooperation.

“I extend my sincere thanks to the many people who supported and assisted me throughout this journey,” Rariden said. “Your commitment and encouragement meant more than I can express. I truly wish the very best for the Town of Edgewood and its future.”

Transition Timeline

  • Effective Date: May 4–8, 2026.
  • Key Achievement: Completion of the Fire/EMS Joint Powers Agreement.
  • Reason for Departure: Pressing health concerns and family obligations.

Town officials have not yet announced the formal process for filling the impending vacancies for the Mayor’s seat or the District 5 commission post. Rariden expressed his continued support for the town’s current leadership as they transition to a new administration.
