Dorsey-Spitz Takes Down 3,200 Gold in Bernalillo

BERNALILLO — Carmen Dorsey-Spitz secured a gold medal in the distance events to highlight the Moriarty High School track and field team’s performance at the 15th annual Bernalillo Invite on Saturday.

Dorsey-Spitz delivered the lone individual victory for the Pintos, cruising to first place in the girls 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:21.08.

Her performance helped the Moriarty girls team finish seventh overall with 40.83 points. St. Michael’s captured the girls team title with 93 points. The Moriarty boys tallied 45.5 points to finish sixth in a team race won by Cibola (60.5).

The Pintos showed out in the relay events on both sides. The girls 4×800 relay team earned a runner-up finish, crossing the line in 10:48.35. The boys 4×200 relay team also took silver with a time of 1:36.87, while the boys 4×400 and 1,600 sprint medley squads each placed third. The girls 1,600 sprint medley team picked up a bronze medal of its own.

In the individual events, Noah Gonzales paced the boys sprinters with a second-place finish in the 200 dash (24.42 seconds). Gonzales also tied for fifth in the long jump.

Ashtyn Walter grabbed a silver medal for the Moriarty girls in the 800, finishing in 2:38.76. In the hurdles, Dawn Burton earned bronze in the 100-meter race (18.96), while Jack Otero matched that effort with a third-place finish in the boys 110 hurdles (20.31).

In the throwing events, Thomas Miller led the way for the Moriarty boys, tossing the discus 119 feet, 2 inches to secure a third-place finish. Lilly Shoemate was the top field-event finisher for the girls, placing fourth in the javelin with a mark of 93-8.

Matthew McMurtrey turned in a solid distance double for the boys, placing fourth in the 3,200 and sixth in the 1,600.
