MORIARTY — Sophomore Scott Batie struck out 10 batters, and the Moriarty Pintos used an eight-run fourth inning to pull away for a 12-1 victory over the Del Norte Knights on Thursday.

The non-conference win moves the Pintos to 2-2 on the season, while the Knights drop to 2-5.

Moriarty’s offense was efficient from the jump, but it was the fourth-inning explosion that ended the contest early via the mercy rule. Leading 4-0, the Pintos sent 13 batters to the plate in the frame, capitalizing on three of Del Norte’s four errors and a steady stream of base runners.

Senior Raiden Scribner provided the veteran spark at the top of the lineup, finishing 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Scribner scored twice and reached base in all three plate appearances, continuing a hot start to the spring.

On the mound, Batie was the story. Over four scoreless innings, he allowed just three hits and one walk while silencing the Knights’ bats. His 10 strikeouts accounted for all but two of the outs recorded during his time on the hill. Oscar Shuck pitched the final inning in relief, surrendering the Knights’ lone run.

The Pintos finished with nine hits as a team and showed significant plate discipline, drawing six walks. Cash Klein contributed a perfect 2-for-2 afternoon with a double and two RBIs, while Batie helped his own cause with a triple and two runs batted in.

Defensively, both teams struggled with the conditions, recording four errors apiece. However, Moriarty’s ability to limit the damage with runners on base proved to be the difference. Del Norte was held to a .200 team batting average, with the Pintos’ staff combining for a 1.40 ERA on the day.

Mario Romero also contributed to the Moriarty effort, going 1-for-1 with two runs scored and an RBI. Tyler Denomme and Nick Kamplain each drove in a run as the Pintos’ lineup produced production from top to bottom.

Moriarty now turns its attention to a quick turnaround as they travel to Bernalillo for a road double-header on Saturday. The first game is scheduled for 9 a.m., followed by the second game at 11 a.m.
