Timberwolves Refuse to Break: East Mountain Extends Record Streak to 14

It wasn’t always pretty, and for a while, it looked like the historic run might finally hit a wall. But the East Mountain High School girls’ basketball team proved once again that they don’t know how to quit, overcoming a double-digit deficit to defeat Bosque 41-35.

With the win, the Timberwolves extend their school-record winning streak to 14 games and improve to an impressive 17-5 on the season.

A Tale of Two Halves

The atmosphere at home was tense as the Timberwolves went into the locker room at halftime trailing 22-15. At one point, the deficit stretched to 10 points. Between missed free throws and sluggish transition defense, the record-breaking streak felt in serious jeopardy.

However, coach Ron Drake—who admitted he’s been quieter lately due to health reasons—found his voice when his team needed it most.

“I got a little loud tonight, which I usually don’t. I used to, but I don’t anymore,” Coach Drake said following the win. “I told them, ‘You got to play better defense than this, and you got to score.’ We were missing easy shots.”

The wake-up call worked. East Mountain tightened the screws on defense and began to find their rhythm, outscoring Bosque significantly in the second half to secure the six-point victory.

The “Green Light” Philosophy

One of the hallmarks of this Timberwolves squad is their fearlessness. While many high school teams struggle with hesitation on the perimeter, Drake has instilled a “shooters shoot” mentality across the roster.

“I gave them the green light,” Drake explained. “I said, ‘You’re open, shoot.’ Just make sure you rebound.”

That confidence was on full display as the scoring load was shared across the lineup. Evelyn Kannolt led the charge with a scrappy 14 points, while Emee Naylor and Genesis Navarro-Chavez provided crucial buckets to fuel the comeback.

Looking Ahead

Despite the celebration of a 14-game streak, Coach Drake isn’t letting his team get complacent. The focus for the upcoming weekend is clear: back to the basics.

“We gotta play better offense, make our shots, and we gotta still play better defense,” Drake noted. “We’re going to work on shooting and defense tomorrow… and rebound, rebound, oh gosh, yes.”

With the momentum of a school record behind them and a coach who has found his “loud” again, the Timberwolves are looking like a formidable force as the postseason approaches.
