Timberwolves Establish Two-Game Lead in District

SANDIA PARK — East Mountain maintained its perfect district record Saturday, surviving a high hit count from Sandia Prep in the opener before an 18-run first-inning explosion fueled a doubleheader sweep of the Sun Devils, 9-3 and 20-6.
The sweep moves the Timberwolves to 16-1 overall and a flawless 6-0 in district play. The victory East Mountain a two-game cushion with nine games remaining on its District 4/5 slate.
Game 1: East Mountain 9, Sandia Prep 3
Aidan Madrid took the mound for the opener and earned the win, pitching four innings and allowing two runs (one earned) while striking out three. Despite allowing 11 hits, Madrid and reliever Quinlan Gwyther managed to strand Sandia Prep runners throughout the contest. Gwyther earned a three-inning save, striking out two and surrendering only one run.

The Timberwolves’ offense was clinical, turning six hits into nine runs. Luke Stoerner led the team with two RBIs, and Madrid helped his own cause with a solo home run. Ty Rector and Gwyther both connected for doubles, while Charles Birdwell and Ryan Moorhead each drove in a run. Brody Johnson, Stace Davis, and Christopher Moya all contributed to the scoring to keep the pressure on the Sun Devils.
Game 2: East Mountain 20, Sandia Prep 6
The nightcap was decided in a boom-town bottom of the first inning as East Mountain erupted for 18 runs on eight hits. Luke Stoerner started the game and earned the victory, pitching three innings and striking out five.
The bullpen saw a committee approach to finish the five-inning contest. Dalton Springall, Tobias Gabaldon, and Cole Darnell all saw time on the mound in relief, with Gabaldon credited with a save.
Ty Rector put on a masterclass at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two home runs and six RBIs. Charles Birdwell and Quinlan Gwyther were equally relentless, both finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI. Christopher Moya, Dalton Springall, and Aidan Madrid each added RBIs, while Owen Darnell came off the bench to drive in two.

The Timberwolves’ depth was the story of the afternoon, with Ryan Moorhead, Brody Johnson, and Stace Davis combining for eight runs scored. Brandon Johnson, Sullivan Millea, and Nathaniel Herrera-Lucero all contributed to the scoring barrage that keeps East Mountain atop the District 5-3A standings.
