Timberwolves Complete Perfect District Slate With Doubleheader Sweep

The East Mountain Timberwolves put an exclamation point on a stellar regular season Friday, completing a doubleheader sweep of the Bosque Bobcats with a 28-0 victory. The win solidifies East Mountain’s position at the top of Class 3A as they head into the postseason with a 25-1 overall record and a perfect 15-0 mark in District 4/5 play.

The Timberwolves now await the New Mexico Activities Association’s state tournament selection show on Sunday. With East Mountain ranked No.1 by both MaxPreps and the New Mexico High School Coaches Association, the Timberwolves will get a bye in the first round of the playoffs, so the only question right now is who will they play?

Offensive Explosion

The Timberwolves’ bats were relentless, racking up 20 hits and capitalizing on seven Bosque errors. After a modest three-run first inning, East Mountain blew the game open with a massive 16-run second inning, followed by a seven-run fourth to cap off the scoring.

Aidan Madrid led the RBI charge, driving in seven runs on three hits, including a triple. Ty Rector and Brody Johnson each crossed the plate four times, while Luke Stoerner, Quinlan Gwyther, and Rector all recorded three-hit performances.

Stoerner’s Masterclass on the Mound

While the offense provided plenty of insurance, senior Luke Stoerner was untouchable on the mound. Stoerner tossed a five-inning complete game, allowing just one hit and walking none.

His efficiency was the story of the afternoon; of the 15 outs recorded, 14 came via strikeout. Stoerner needed only 65 pitches to dismantle the Bobcats’ lineup, facing just one over the minimum.

Game Two

Cole Darnell turned in another clinical performance on the mound and the East Mountain offense provided early fireworks as the Timberwolves shut out Bosque 11-0 on Friday in the first game of the conference doubleheader.

Darnell, East Mountain’s career strikeout leader, added to his 219-count total by fanning 10 Bobcats over five innings. The senior right-hander was efficient, allowing just one hit on 74 pitches without yielding a walk.

The Timberwolves’ bats backed their ace immediately, putting up four runs in the first inning and five more in the second. Luke Stoerner fueled the 11-hit attack, going 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Ryan Moorhead stayed perfect at the plate as well, finishing 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a walk.

East Mountain took advantage of six Bosque errors to keep the pressure on. Charles Birdwell finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Quinlan Gwyther and Brody Johnson combined for three hits and three runs.

The defensive effort was clean behind Darnell, with Aidan Madrid and Stace Davis contributing to the shutout. Christopher Moya and Tobias Gabaldon also saw action for the Timberwolves, who ended the contest after five innings via the mercy rule.
