Lady Timberwolves Have Reached a Tipping Point

When the 2025-26 East Mountain Lady Timberwolves tipped off their season on December 2nd, Coach Ron Drake laid out a mission as rugged as the Sandia Mountains: Learn how to win basketball games, and everything else will take care of itself.
Nearly two months into that journey, “everything else” is looking like a historic powerhouse.
The Lady Timberwolves aren’t just winning; they are rewriting the program’s DNA. Sitting at an impressive 13-5 overall and a perfect 2-0 in District 5-3A play, East Mountain is currently riding a school-record 10-game winning streak. More importantly, they stand just one victory away from securing the program’s first-ever winning season.
The Formula for the Streak
This isn’t a fluke; it’s a grind. The “Drake Formula” has been built on three unbreakable pillars:
- Stifling Defensive Play: Forcing opponents into uncomfortable shots and contested lanes.
- Ball Security: A disciplined “love” for protecting the rock, minimizing the self-inflicted wounds that plagued seasons past.
- The “One-and-Done” Rule: Denying second chances by relentlessly crashing the boards and cleaning up under the basket.
The Road to the Crown
This blueprint has transformed East Mountain from a participant into a district frontrunner. While traditional powers like Cuba, Sandia Prep, and Cottonwood Classical remain in the hunt, the Timberwolves are currently the ones with the target on their backs.

However, despite a resume that sparkles with 10 straight “Ws,” the skeptics still have their calendars circled for Thursday, January 29th.
The “Neighborhood Bully” Awaits
The doubters point to one name: Cottonwood Classical.
The Lady Coyotes may sport an unassuming 11-9 record, but they possess the ultimate psychological edge. They are responsible for a heart-wrenching one-point win over East Mountain earlier this season in tournament play. More dauntingly, Cottonwood has acted as the neighborhood “bully” for a decade, boasting a staggering 18-2 head-to-head record against the Timberwolves over the last 10 years.

Time to Take the Lunch Money Back
Cue the Rocky theme music.
The Lady Timberwolves are tired of being the underdog story. They are tired of having their lunch money taken. Thursday at 5:30 PM, East Mountain isn’t just playing for a win; they are playing to take it all back and prove that the new era of Timberwolves basketball is here to stay.
