Ground-and-Pound Showdown: 6–1 Estancia Takes High-Powered Rushing Attack to Legacy Academy

ESTANCIA, N.M. — Estancia High School takes its powerhouse ground game on the road Saturday evening, traveling to Bernalillo High School for a District 2-2A clash against the Legacy Academy Silverbacks.

The Bears enter the contest riding high at 6–1 overall (1–0 district) after routing Tularosa 53–14. Legacy Academy sits at 3–4 overall but holds a matching 1–0 district mark following an overtime victory against Cobre.

The matchup presents a battle of trench warfare versus backfield depth, featuring two of the district’s most productive rushers and active front-sevens.

Rushing: The Running Showdown

Both offenses revolve around playmakers carry different styles into the backfield.

Estancia’s sophomore quarterback has put together one of the most explosive campaigns in New Mexico small-school football. He averages 197.4 rushing yards per contest and has already piled up 21 total touchdowns, giving the Bears an every-down workhorse who regularly rips off chunk plays. Junior Quintin Barela adds balance to Estancia’s option and sweep looks, contributing 82.0 yards per game on the sod.

Legacy Academy counters with senior tailback Xander Chavez. Operating out of a physical two-way role, Chavez paces the Silverbacks with 79.6 rushing yards per game and seven total touchdowns, serving as the Albuquerque squad’s primary inside runner.

Passing and Receiving: Controlled Efficiency vs. Perimeter Attacks

Neither team spends long stretches dropping straight back to pass, but both have reliable targets when forced to go to the air.

Estancia’s passing game is built strictly off play-action designed to freeze linebackers creeping up to stop the run. Junior wideout Joshua Villafuerte leads the Bears through the air, hauling in 31.9 receiving yards per game. Sophomore Michael Murray provides an additional target down the seam.

For Legacy Academy, junior quarterback Cameron Maldonado orchestrates the pocket, looking frequently toward junior wide receiver Christian Perez. Perez tops the Silverbacks’ receiving corps with 45.2 receiving yards per game, while sophomore tight end Isaiah Garcia provides a reliable target over the middle.

Tackles and Defense: Front Sevens in the Spotlight

Defensively, Estancia is anchored by sophomore linebacker Johnathan Valencia, who leads the Bears with an even 10.0 tackles per game. Up front, sophomore defensive end Kayden Sartain provides heavy pressure in opposing backfields with a team-high 5.0 sacks. In the secondary, Villafuerte doubles as a shutdown cornerback with four interceptions this fall.

The Silverbacks rely on a pair of physical linebackers and interior anchors to plug gaps. Senior linebacker Jerome Salazar leads Legacy Academy with 5.6 tackles per game, while Xander Chavez averages over five stops an outing from his linebacker perch. Junior defensive lineman Elijah Hernandez gives Legacy a disruptor on the edge, matching Sartain with 5.0 sacks on the season alongside senior defensive end Grady Dlugonski (4.5 sacks).

Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at Bernalillo High School.
