FEELING THE CRUNCH: Food Pantry in Need of Staples, Side Items

TIJERAS — While the winter holiday season typically brings a surge of charitable giving, local food bank organizers say inflation is creating a severe, year-round crisis for families trying to keep food on the table.

At the East Mountain Food Pantry, the need for assistance does not disappear with the holiday decorations. Persistent economic pressures, driven by the rising costs of everyday essentials, have forced an increasing number of residents to rely on food assistance well into the new year.

“Your generosity provides the reliable foundation our pantry needs to operate year-round,” the pantry stated on its website, emphasizing the vital role of consistent, monthly commitments from the community to maintain stable food supplies.

As inflation continues to squeeze household budgets, staple items have become increasingly difficult for low- and fixed-income families to afford. Pantry organizers noted that while community support is strong during November and December, the shelves require constant replenishment during the spring and summer months when donations traditionally slow down.

Currently, the East Mountain Food Pantry is facing a particular shortage of shelf-stable, boxed side dishes. Organizers are putting out an urgent call for donations of rice sides, instant potatoes, and similar boxed goods to help families build complete, nutritious meals.

To meet the sustained demand, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization relies heavily on local donors and community food drives. Monetary contributions are also utilized year-round to purchase staple items and respond quickly when local demand spikes.

Community members looking to support the pantry can drop off fresh produce and non-perishable goods at 1342 NM-333, Suite B, in Tijeras during designated distribution hours: Mondays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Thursdays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Organizers noted that they are not accepting hygiene items at this time.

Financial donations, which are tax-deductible, can also be made directly through the East Mountain Food Pantry website to help fund its ongoing mission.
