Edgewood to Honor History with Flag Retirement Ceremony

EDGEWOOD — As the nation marches toward its Semiquincentennial, the Town of Edgewood is preparing to look back with a profound sense of duty. On Saturday, Feb. 21, residents will gather at Venus Park to participate in a formal Flag Retirement Ceremony, marking a key chapter in the local commemorations of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

The midday event, scheduled to begin at 12:00 PM, offers a moment of civic reflection. In a partnership bridging local communities, the American Legion Post 22 of Estancia will preside over the proceedings, ensuring that worn and weathered banners are decommissioned with the highest military and patriotic honors.

A Dignified Farewell

The ceremony is not merely a disposal of cloth, but a rite of passage for the “proud emblem” of the United States. According to organizers, the event serves as a vital educational opportunity for residents of all ages to learn the proper protocols for handling the national colors.

“An American flag should be retired when its condition no longer allows for a dignified display,” event coordinators stated. “Recognizing these signs ensures the flag’s symbolic integrity is upheld.”

When is it Time?

For many residents, it can be difficult to know when a flag has reached the end of its service. Experts from Post 22 and the town liaison suggest looking for the following unmistakable signs of wear:

  • Frayed edges or significant tearing in the fabric.
  • Faded colors resulting from prolonged exposure to the New Mexico sun and wind.
  • Structural damage, such as separated seams or brittle material that compromises the flag’s appearance.

Community Participation

The town is calling on all neighbors to check their homes and businesses. If you possess a flag that has fulfilled its purpose and is no longer fit for display, you are encouraged to bring it to Venus Park on Saturday to be included in the formal retirement.

Groups or organizations wishing to participate in the ceremony, or individuals with specific questions, are encouraged to reach out to the Community Liaison for further details.
