SANDIA PARK, N.M. — The East Mountain High School volleyball program is rallying the local community for a benefit match this month to support two East Mountain families affected by cancer.

The Timberwolves will host their annual “Dig Pink” game on Oct. 27, dedicating the evening’s fundraising efforts to Sailor Metge and Katie Shelton.

Metge, an East Mountain volleyball player known among teammates as a dedicated older sister and vibrant presence on the court, is currently undergoing treatment for acute myeloid leukemia, an aggressive cancer of the blood and bone marrow. Organizers said the event aims to surround Metge and her family with community support and financial relief as she navigates her diagnosis.

The event will also honor Shelton, a U.S. Air Force veteran and mother of three — Garret, Wyatt, and Ainsley — who is an active supporter of East Mountain High athletics. Shelton was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in December 2025. Following surgery and medical treatment, Shelton is now in remission, and organizers plan to celebrate her milestone while continuing to assist her family.

Organizers are hoping bless them in a big way and remind them that they are not walking this road alone.

To raise funds, the team is hosting a charity raffle featuring gift baskets, local artisan goods, and gift cards donated by community members and area businesses. Raffle tickets are available for $1 each, with all proceeds divided directly between the Metge and Shelton families.

Organizers are accepting additional prize donations ahead of the event. Community members interested in donating items or purchasing raffle tickets can contribute via Venmo to @kasi-giovenco.
