Defensive Dominance: East Mountain Stifles Tucumcari Early, Moves to 7-0

SANDIA PARK — For the first ten minutes of action on Tuesday night at the Vista Grande Community Center, the rim was essentially closed for the visiting team.

Relying on a suffocating defense and a hot shooting night from Vicente J. Ortiz, the Class 3A No. 5 ranked East Mountain Timberwolves rolled past Tucumcari 46-25 to keep their perfect record intact at 7-0.

The Timberwolves set the tone immediately, shutting out Tucumcari for the entire first quarter to take a commanding 16-0 lead. The shutout streak extended two minutes into the second quarter, a defensive statement that allowed East Mountain to control the tempo despite a busy week of academics and recent tournament play.

“I’m really pleased with the response we had coming off the tournament (Bruce King),” East Mountain head coach Brad Hofmann said. “It was interesting to see if we would [relax] a little bit. It’s finals week, kids have a lot of work, and we have kids not at practice… because they have to take care of their school stuff. But I think given all those different things, the kids did a great job locking in and taking care of business.”

While the defense built the lead, Ortiz provided the offensive spark. The senior poured in a game-high 20 points, doing significant damage from beyond the arc with five 3-pointers.

Eric Hofmann contributed 9 points to the winning effort, while Liam Pierce added 8. The Timberwolves showcased their depth with scoring contributions across the roster, including 3 points each from Quinlan Gwyther and Caden Fuerstenberg, 2 from Aiden Erickson, and a free throw from Brody Fryar.

Despite the lopsided start, Tucumcari (3-4) found their footing in the second and third quarters. The Timberwolves led 24-8 at halftime and 37-19 heading into the final frame.

Coach Hofmann was quick to credit the resilience of the Tucumcari squad, noting the brutal schedule the Rattlers have faced recently.

“I was impressed watching those guys. They’re well coached. They’re very together,” Hofmann said. “They played a tournament like we did—Thursday, Friday, Saturday—then they played Melrose… and then had to come here tonight. So that is a hugely tough ask. I was super impressed with their effort, their guts. I think that’s a good team that’s going to win a bunch of games.”

The victory marks a successful transition into a brief lull in the schedule for the Timberwolves. Following an intense run of games, the team is looking at a lighter load heading into the holidays.

East Mountain will host Oak Grove Classical Academy (3-2) in a noon game this Saturday. After that, the team plans to take a few days off to recharge before preparing for Santa Rosa, Jan 2, at 7 pm at home.

“We play Saturday, we practice Monday, Tuesday. We’re off for three days, and then we’re back at it,” Hofmann explained regarding the upcoming Christmas break.

When asked about the risks of taking a break amidst a hot streak, Hofmann emphasized the human element of high school sports.

“You always want to stay on top of things, but I think we trust our kids. You need family. You need a break. This is a long season,” Hofmann said. “If you’re not playing, we’re going to have a lot of games second semester. So it makes sense to me… be with your family, at least have some time.”
