Call for New Leadership as Sandia Knolls Neighborhood Association Seeks Volunteers

By RUSSELL HUFFMAN
The Sandia Knolls Neighborhood Association (SKNA) is urging residents to step up and take the reins as the current leadership wishes to step down. New officers and a number of community issues will be discussed on Oct. 25 (10 am-noon) at the Vista Grande Community Center in Sandia Park.
“This is our community, and our neighborhood association is one important element in building a strong community… We think it is time for new leadership,” wrote SKNA secretary Janet Winchester-Silbaugh on the Sandia Knolls Community page on Facebook.
This call to action offers residents the chance to inject new energy and ideas into the organization. Those interested in leading the association, or who know of potential candidates, are encouraged to attend the upcoming meeting on the 25th to speak up and get involved.
Important Topics on the Agenda
The meeting, which SKNA President Mark Emery hopes will draw many attendees, features a robust agenda covering immediate concerns and long-term community planning.
Key discussion points include:
- New Leadership Election: The primary focus will be the election of NEW Officers to ensure a smooth transition and continued operation of the association.
- Emergency Preparedness: A vital segment will cover how every household can be prepared for electric outages. This will be paired with a discussion and test of the
- SKNA Emergency Phone system and instructions for signing up for the Bernalillo County Emergency Phone System.
- Wildfire Safety: Residents will discuss the critical issue of defining and preparing for a secondary evacuation route.
- Community Concerns: The agenda addresses several ongoing quality-of-life issues, including the management of neighborhood dogs, issues caused by bright lights left on all night, and the problems created by feeding wild animals (Deer).
- Infrastructure: A look at the state of the aging water system will be a key point of discussion.
- Expert Insight: The association will welcome Megan Holcomb, Bernalillo County Neighborhood Association Coordinator, who will provide valuable resources and perspective.

“I hope you can make some time on the 25th to join us for the meeting, it has been a while since we had our last meeting. If you have new neighbors, please let them know we have a Neighborhood Association and invite them to the meeting. Bring your questions and concerns for us to work on. The more the merrier!” wrote SKNA president Mark Emery President SKNA.
Vista Grande Community Center is located in Sandia Park at 15 La Madera Road.
