Baldonado, Cillessen Sweep as EVCA Archers Open Season at First Shot Tournament

EDGEWOOD, N.M. — Sharp shooting and a sweep of the girls division by high school team captain Lily Baldonado highlighted the 2026 First Shot Archery Tournament, where Estancia Valley Classical Academy archers across three divisions tested their aim in both Bullseye and 3D competitions.

The intra-squad event served as the season opener for EVCA’s three Sagittarii squads — grammar, middle, and high school — which have grown to more than 100 student competitors.

“Thank you everyone for all the help and attendance at our first tournament of the season,” EVCA head coach Tim Beard said. “This was an inner-squad tournament to get our Sagittarii prepared for competition this season. Our teams have grown considerably. We now have 100-plus students involved in three teams.”

Baldonado paced the EVCA high school girls field, sweeping first place in both events with a 280 (11 tens) in 3D and a 273 (12 tens) in Bullseye. Harley Brown claimed second in 3D (253) and third in Bullseye (264), while Abigale Broughton took runner-up honors in Bullseye with a 268. Analeia Gonzales rounded out the 3D podium in third with a 239.

In the high school boys division, Grayson Huston and Uriah Cruz split top honors. Huston claimed the Bullseye crown with a 281 and 15 tens, edging Henry Fuchs (270) and Cruz (266). Cruz took the 3D contest, carding a 271 with 14 tens to edge Huston (270) and Fuchs (266). Fuchs also earned tournament accolades in EVCA’s inaugural Long Shot Competition, hitting a bullseye to claim victory on the best single arrow out of 368 total shots.

The middle school boys division generated the day’s highest individual scores courtesy of team captain Dean Cillessen. Cillessen swept both disciplines, posting a 293 with 24 tens in Bullseye and a 285 (18 tens) in 3D. Austin Padilla was runner-up in both categories with a 271 in Bullseye and a 269 in 3D. Carson Rose took third in Bullseye (267), and Nikolas Griego finished third in 3D (267).

“A couple things to notice in the results: High school team captain Lily taking first place in both Bullseye and 3D, and middle school team captain Dean taking first place in both divisions also,” Beard said. “Their scores may lead to national rankings. Dean’s score in Bullseye may possibly rank as No. 1 in the nation if he keeps shooting this well this season.”

Dejah Sanchez led the middle school girls with a sweep of her own, firing 258 in Bullseye and 243 in 3D. Miabella Landey secured second place in both events (241 Bullseye, 205 3D). Temperance Fuchs placed third in Bullseye (233), and Paisley Love took third in 3D (193).

The EVCA high school squad posted combined team scores of 3,043 in Bullseye and 1,589 in 3D, while the middle school team carded 3,005 in Bullseye and 1,519 in 3D.

“High school and middle school team scores in both 3D and Bullseye are already high enough to qualify for Western Nationals in Utah if we shoot this well or better at state competition in March,” Beard noted.

In the elementary division, Claire Cillessen swept the girls bracket with a 203 in Bullseye and a 187 in 3D, followed by Ember Ratliff in second (131 Bullseye, 120 3D) and Ellyanna Lupanacci in third (111 Bullseye, 101 3D). Truman Rose led the boys field, posting a 235 in 3D and a 227 in Bullseye. Coulter Carman placed second in both events (191 3D, 184 Bullseye), while Zachary Farmer took third in Bullseye (164) and Donavan Allen took third in 3D (139). The elementary teams finished with combined marks of 1,780 in Bullseye and 1,006 in 3D.

“Congratulations to every archer that attended and did their best,” Beard added. “No matter what your score was, we all had fun. We keep scores so you can see how you improve as we keep practicing.”
