The Pirates are Coming, and we aren’t Norse-ing Around

EDGEWOOD — A local nature sanctuary will transform into a historical fantasy realm this August as the annual Pirate & Viking Summer Festival returns to the East Mountains.
The two-day immersive event is scheduled for Aug. 22 and Aug. 23 at the Wildlife West Nature Park running from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.
The festival functions as a major community gathering and a direct benefit for local wildlife conservation, with a portion of every adult ticket sale going toward supporting the zoo and its rescued animals. To encourage regional participation, admission is free for children aged 17 and under when accompanied by an adult.
The festival grounds will feature five performance stages hosting nonstop entertainment throughout the weekend. The entertainment lineup includes belly dancing by troupes such as Shamshir, fire shows, comedy, armored medieval combat demonstrations, and live folk and fantasy music. Featured musical acts include Nordic Daughter, the Tingley Beach Buccaneers, Tea and Strumpets, and Celtica Nova, who will perform a specialized Viking set.
In addition to live performances, the event offers educational “History Stops” where attendees can learn maritime legends and Norse sagas. An interactive “Festival Quest” adventure will also run throughout the weekend to immerse visitors in the event’s lore.
Between 60 and 100 craft merchants are scheduled to sell historical garb, leatherwork, and fantasy wares alongside themed food vendors. Multiple taverns and beer gardens will also operate across the grounds, serving traditional mead and regional craft beers.
For dedicated enthusiasts, a “Friends of the Festival” VIP program offers extended access, including festival camping, themed camp guilds, a Friday night potluck with the performers, and adult-only after-parties on Saturday night.
