Transforming a Danger Zone: NMDOT Proposes Roundabout for Mountain Valley Road Intersection

EDGEWOOD — For years, local drivers have known the intersection of NM 333 and Mountain Valley Road (NM 217) as a high-stress “danger zone.” Following a history of frequent and severe accidents just west of Edgewood, the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is finally moving forward with a plan to break the cycle of collisions.

After a rigorous 2025 traffic and safety study, officials have named a roundabout as the preferred solution to tame this notorious junction.

Why a Roundabout?

NMDOT weighed three primary options—enhanced signage, a traditional traffic signal, and a roundabout. While a stoplight might seem like the standard fix, the data told a different story:

  • Eliminating T-Bones: Roundabouts virtually eliminate the high-speed “right-angle” and head-on crashes that have plagued this specific location.
  • Forced Calm: The design forces a reduction in speed, ensuring that if a mistake does happen, it results in a minor “fender bender” rather than a life-altering tragedy.
  • Constant Movement: Unlike signals that can lead to long backups (and frustrated, risky driving), roundabouts keep Edgewood commuters moving steadily.

Your Voice Matters: How to Get Involved

This intersection isn’t just a point on a map; it’s a daily reality for those living along Mountain Valley Road. NMDOT is actively seeking input from the people who know these curves and blind spots best.

If you are a resident, local business owner, or a daily commuter, your feedback will directly influence the final design and implementation.

The Bottom Line: This project is about more than just traffic flow—it’s about making sure every neighbor who turns onto Mountain Valley Road makes it home safely.
