Timberwolves Roar Back: East Mountain Captures Bruce King Invitational Title with Comeback Win Over Melrose

MORIARTY — The East Mountain Timberwolves proved that it isn’t how you start, but how you finish that counts.
Overcoming a double-digit first-half deficit and a rampant start by their opponents, East Mountain (6-0) rallied to defeat the previously unbeaten Melrose Buffaloes (5-1) 65-54 on Saturday night to claim the championship of the Bruce King Basketball Tournament at Moriarty High School.
The Timberwolves trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half and faced a 35-27 deficit at the break. However, a blistering third-quarter performance, led by the hot hand of junior Vicente Ortiz, turned the tide.
“Melrose came out on fire and kind of punched us in the mouth at the beginning of the game,” said East Mountain head coach Brad Hofmann. “But we stayed with it.”
A Tale of Two Halves
Melrose opened the game aggressively, putting the Timberwolves on their heels with a 24-13 lead after the first quarter. While East Mountain struggled to find a rhythm, senior Liam Pierce kept the Timberwolves within striking distance, scoring 13 of his 16 points in the first half. despite the effort, East Mountain couldn’t get closer than four points before the break.

The dynamic shifted entirely in the third quarter.
Fueled by a 21-9 run, East Mountain erased the deficit and took a 48-44 lead heading into the final frame. The catalyst was Ortiz, who erupted for 20 of his game-high 25 points in the second half. Ortiz drained four of his six total 3-pointers after the break.
“We were on a heater there. Vicente was on fire. So it was like, ‘Let’s get him the ball,’” Hofmann said of the second-half strategy. “The boys were doing a great job finding Vicente and being patient.”
Defense and Depth
The comeback was complicated by foul trouble for Eric Hofmann, the eventual Tournament MVP. Hofmann sat for significant stretches after picking up his fourth foul early in the third quarter.
In his absence, the Timberwolves’ depth shone through. Tony Cintron-Warren delivered a critical performance off the bench. Tasked with guarding Melrose’s primary scoring threat—who Hofmann noted was “on fire”—Cintron-Warren managed to slow the Buffaloes’ momentum while contributing six points of his own in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.
“That’s what I’m talking about, adjustment-wise,” Coach Hofmann said regarding the lineup changes. “Eric was out. Didn’t matter. Tony was just playing great… Tony was able to slow him down a little bit and enough for us to kind of catch our bearings.”
Tournament Resume
The victory capped a rigorous three-day stretch for the Timberwolves. To reach the championship, East Mountain defeated New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) 49-42 in a physical contest and knocked off the host team, Moriarty, 60-49, in front of a raucous home crowd.

“I’m super proud of the guys,” Hofmann said. “NMMI is a good team… and we bounced back to play Moriarty. It was a good environment playing the home team, so we had to gut that one out.”
By the Numbers
Eric Hofmann finished with 10 points and was named Tournament MVP. Liam Pierce joined him on the All-Tournament team. Aiden Erickson added 10 points for the T-Wolves, while Quinlan Gwyther chipped in 2.

For the Timberwolves, the win maintains their perfect 6-0 record as they look ahead to their next contest.
“We just play 32 minutes,” Coach Hofmann said. “Good or bad at the beginning, just keep going.”
