Eight Moriarty Wrestlers Advance at Region 1-4A Championships

TUCUMCARI – Five Moriarty Pintos are still in the hunt for a NMAA Regional 1-4A wrestling title and eight have already qualified for next week’s state championships.

Gabriel Gustafson, Sonny Apodaca, Lucas Rodelas Lozoya, Caleb Gustafson, Mishen Jaramillo all won their quarterfinal matches and are preparing for runs at regional crowns today.

Gavin Everett, Lance Volk and Victor Dominguez battled their way through the consolation brackets to nail down their qualifications.

The Leaders of the Pack

Leading the charge for Moriarty were Gavin Everett (126) and Lance Volk (285), both of whom racked up a team-high 13.0 points.

Everett provided some of the day’s most exciting moments, bouncing back from a tough quarterfinal loss to record three pins on the day, including a dramatic third-period fall over Los Alamos’ Tyven Beaux in the consolation rounds. Meanwhile, heavyweight Lance Volk showed his dominance in the consolation bracket, recording two lightning-fast pins—both in under two minutes—to secure his 6th-place finish.

Grinding Through the Consolation

The tournament wasn’t without its hurdles. Ethan McClaskey (120) and Angelo Montoya (175) both battled through deep brackets to earn 8th-place finishes. McClaskey showed immense heart, picking up two pins on the day, while Montoya opened his tournament strong with a second-period fall over St. Michael’s Mel Rael.

Though Dominic Lopez (106) and Fabian Silva (165) fell short of the podium, both young wrestlers gained valuable regional experience against top-tier opponents from Miyamura and Tucumcari.
