East Mountain’s Kyle Hofmann Swaps United Black and Yellow for Bulldog Red

SANDIA PARK — Gardner-Webb University has bolstered its defensive unit with the signing of Kyle Hofmann, a highly touted prospect from the New Mexico United academy system.

Hofmann, a 6-foot-3 defender from Sandia Park, New Mexico, joins the Runnin’ Bulldogs after a standout tenure in the USL Championship’s developmental ranks. Earlier this spring, Hofmann signed a USL Academy contract with New Mexico United’s first team, allowing him to train and compete at the professional level while preserving his collegiate eligibility.

A graduate of East Mountain High School, Hofmann is widely regarded for his aerial presence and ability to distribute from the back. His path to Division I soccer included several years at the prestigious Barça Residency Academy in Arizona before he returned to New Mexico to anchor the United Academy’s defense.

The signing is a significant pickup for the Bulldogs, who compete in the Big South Conference. Hofmann’s transition from the professional atmosphere of the USL to the NCAA ranks follows a growing trend of elite youth players utilizing academy contracts to bridge the gap between club and college soccer.

Hofmann is expected to join the roster for the upcoming season as Gardner-Webb looks to build on its recent postseason appearances. Official terms of the athletic scholarship were not disclosed.
