Birdwell’s “Dream Season” Dominating New Mexico High School Leaderboards

SANDIA PARK — East Mountain senior centerfielder Charlie Birdwell is putting together a statistical campaign that is quickly becoming the talk of high school baseball across the state. Through 14 games, Birdwell isn’t just leading Class 3A; he is sitting at the top of overall New Mexico leaderboards in multiple power categories.

A Power Surge in the East Mountains

Birdwell’s offensive production has been nothing short of explosive. In 58 plate appearances, he has recorded 28 hits—18 of which have gone for extra bases. His current stat line reads like a scout’s wishlist:

  • 10 Doubles
  • 3 Triples
  • 6 Home Runs (1st in New Mexico)
  • 39 RBI (1st in New Mexico)

To put his run production into perspective, Birdwell has 15 more RBIs than his closest competitor in Class 3A.

Quality and Quantity

While some high averages can be the result of a small sample size, Birdwell’s numbers are backed by heavy volume. His .609 batting average ranks 15th statewide, but a closer look reveals his consistency: Birdwell has logged 46 official at-bats, more than double the plate appearances of nine of the players ranked above him.

His ability to reach base and move runners is reflected in a 1.304 slugging percentage, which leads Class 3A and ranks second in the entire state.
