The Mixed-Conifer Forest

The trail begins and ends within the Balsam Glade Picnic Site, surrounded by the lush mixed-conifer life zone. Despite its name, the area is predominantly filled with white fir (mistaken for balsam fir by an early settler, hence the name) and ponderosa pine. This cool, shady environment is a stark contrast to the drier piñon-juniper foothills below, making it an ideal retreat during the warmer months.

The path is relatively level, packed dirt, and easy to navigate, making it an excellent choice for young families, seniors, or those seeking a peaceful, low-impact nature walk. Along the way, hikers have opportunities for wildlife viewing, including the chance to spot various bird species that thrive in the upper-mountain canopy.

The Rewarding View: La Madera Canyon Overlook

The main attraction of this short path is the terminus at the La Madera Canyon Overlook. This breathtaking viewpoint provides a sweeping panorama looking south and east across Madera Canyon.

From this perch at around 8,650 feet, you can see:

  • The vast expanse of the eastern plains.
  • The distant volcanic peaks of the Ortiz Mountain Chain to the east.
  • The settlements of the old village of La Madera and the Paa-ko Subdivision in the near foreground.

It is a fantastic spot for photography, especially when the morning light hits the valley or during a clear sunset.

📜 A Glimpse into the Past: CCC and the YMCA

The Balsam Glade area holds a rich local history that adds depth to the scenic view.

From 1935 to 1941, the YMCA operated a summer camp for boys at this location. While the camp buildings are gone, you can still find the stone steps that led into the old dining hall.
  • The CCC Legacy: The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was active in this area in the 1930s, helping to build much of the infrastructure on the east side of the Sandias, including parts of the Crest Road (NM 536) and the picnic grounds. The picnic site itself features a reservable group shelter that is a replica of a mid-1930s CCC design, honoring their lasting presence.
  • The Y-Camp: From 1935 to 1941, the YMCA operated a summer camp for boys at this location. While the camp buildings are gone, you can still find the stone steps that led into the old dining hall—a silent reminder of the hundreds of children who spent summers exploring this glade decades ago.
