Dynamic Rushing Attacks Highlight Santa Rosa-Estancia Showdown

ESTANCIA, N.M. — Two high-powered ground attacks clash Friday night when the Santa Rosa Lions visit the Estancia Bears in a marquee non-district small-school showdown.

Both squads enter the contest with momentum and potent running games that have overwhelmed defenses through the opening five weeks of the season.
Estancia (4-1) relies on a relentless ground assault that has piled up 1,828 yards and 23 touchdowns, averaging 365.6 yards per game. The Bears’ sophomore quarterback serves as the focal point of the Bears’ offense, having rushed for 980 yards and 14 touchdowns on 97 carries — an eye-popping 10.1 yards per carry. The quarterback also leads the passing attack with 286 yards and two touchdowns on 21 completions.
The Bears feature plenty of complementary rushers alongside their quarterback. Junior Quintin Barela has added 412 yards and two touchdowns on 67 carries, while sophomore Michael Murray has found the end zone five times on the ground while racking up 268 yards. When Estancia takes to the air, Murray has been the primary scoring threat, hauling in five receptions for 99 yards and three scores, while junior Joshua Villafuerte leads the team in catches with 12 for 136 yards.

Santa Rosa (3-2) will counter with its own dynamic ground game, which has amassed 1,372 yards and 17 scores at 8.1 yards per clip. Senior workhorse Preston Muniz powers the Lions’ backfield, having carried the ball 83 times for 751 yards and 13 touchdowns. Muniz also poses a dangerous threat out of the backfield and out wide, leading Santa Rosa with six receptions for 211 yards and two touchdowns, including a season-long 98-yard score.
Senior Marcos Velasquez provides a steady presence in the Lions’ offense, contributing 416 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 64 carries while matching Muniz for the team lead in receptions with six catches for 108 yards. Senior quarterback Lachlan Ross directs the Lions through the air, throwing for 377 yards and two touchdowns while completing 57.7% of his passes (15 of 26) with 128 rushing yards and a score.
With both defenses expected to load the box to stop 700-plus-yard rushers, control of the line of scrimmage and turnover margins will likely dictate the outcome.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Estancia High School.
