Pintos and Lady Pintos take Second at District Track Meet

LOS ALAMOS – Driven by dominant performances in the throwing rings and a series of high-flying field event victories, the Moriarty Pintos secured a massive haul of podium finishes at the District 2-4A Track and Field Championships on Friday at Sullivan Field.

The Pintos and Lady Pintos are both sending an even dozen athletes to this weekend’s New Mexico Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque.

The Pintos’ strength was on full display in the boys’ discus, where Thomas Miller captured the district title with a throw of 135-0. Teammate Lance Volk followed closely, taking third with a mark of 122-8.5. Volk also asserted his presence in the shot put, winning the district crown with a heave of 45-09.

On the track, senior Carmen Dorsey-Spitz continued her stellar season, winning the 3,200-meter run in 11:36.80. The Lady Pintos also found gold in the technical events, as Payten Butler cleared 10-00.00 to win the pole vault and Dawn Burton sped to a district title in the 300-meter hurdles (51.61).

The Moriarty boys proved to be the class of the relay field. The quartet of Noah Gonzales, Cash Carpenter, Mateo Griego-Manley, and Devin Ortiz swept the sprint relays, taking first in both the 4×200 (1:31.32) and the 4×400 (3:32.14). Carpenter added an individual gold in the long jump with a leap of 21-05.50, leading a Moriarty sweep of the top three spots alongside Gonzales and Griego-Manley.

Distance runner Ashtyn Walter added to the Pintos’ gold medal count, winning the girls’ 800-meter run in 2:30.16. Matthew McMurtrey anchored the boys’ distance efforts, placing sixth in the 3,200m and seventh in the 1600m.

Moriarty finished the meet with 124.5 points for the boys and 108.5 points for the girls, placing second in the team standings for both divisions behind host Los Alamos.
